What to do at a time like this. It’s a typical Saturday afternoon and you are just sitting back and watching a movie in the comfort of your home. It’s the dead of winter so there is nothing quite as appealing as relaxing, watching a movie, and unwinding in your warm living space. Half way into your movie you notice that the air is the room seems to be quite cold, something you did not notice upfront. Much to your surprise when you take a closer look it appears your furnace stopped working or was not working at all.
Your first reaction will be frustration and fear for sure. However, the folks here at M&A HVAC Services, LLC want to give you a few quick tips you can embark on before going into emergency mode and calling the 24/7 hotline. For starters, venture over to the breaker box and turn the circuit breaker for the furnace on and off. Often times this will get the furnace running again.
If that does not work, then take a close look at your thermostat settings. When you do not alter your settings for a length of time, the thermostat setting lowers which prevents the furnace from automatically kicking on. Increase the setting on your thermostat and see if the furnace starts running. If you happen to have a programmable thermostat it may be something as simple as changing the battery or perhaps, at a closer look, you will find that you simply did not turn the thermostat to the heat position before you nestled in to watch and unwind.
If nothing positive comes of these two attempts then check the filters on your furnace. If the filters are excessively dirty or clogged they will definitely contribute to a wide range of issues with your furnace including its inability to start up. Change the filters, click the power switch on the furnace off and on to serve as a reset and see if the furnace starts up within minutes.
If you’ve still had no luck and you happen to own an older furnace, you should then check the pilot light on the furnace. If this pilot light goes out for any reason the furnace cannot start up. Take a moment to relight the pilot light and within minutes the furnace should start up and be operational again.
